NYU Tandon announces partnership with Ukrainian Catholic University to provide free online summer classes and compensated research opportunities for displaced students

The six-week research program, which began on June 20, 2022, allows Ukrainian students currently enrolled in a degree program in Computer Science and Information Technology to participate.

Additionally, over 70 students are taking free summer classes.

BROOKLYN, New York, July 20, 2022 – As part of a comprehensive effort to support students and scholars in Ukraine, the New York University Tandon School of Engineering partnered with the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU), Lviv, Ukraine to offer free online classes and compensated summer research opportunities to students currently enrolled in a degree program in Computer Science and Information Technology at an accredited Ukrainian university.

Under the aegis of the program, Ukrainian students are taking NYU Tandon Online Graduate Program classes free of charge, and engaging in collaborative research projects; they have the guidance of world-class researchers in data science and responsible AI through the NYU Tandon Center for Responsible AI. These courses and research opportunities are fully remote.

On Thursday, July 28, 9:00 Eastern Time (U.S. and Canada), participating students in Ukraine will give a presentation of their research over Zoom, free to the public. The live event will be accessible on zoom. There will be an opportunity to ask questions.

“The short-term goal is to allow students to continue their studies during these difficult times,” said Program Coordinator Julia Stoyanovich, Institute Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, Associate Professor of Data Science, and Director of the Center for Responsible AI. “The long-term goal is to help Ukraine rebuild, while growing the country’s capacity and strengthening its international presence in the critical and emerging areas of computer science and data science.”

As part of this program, teams of two to three Ukrainian students are working with faculty members and graduate student researchers at NYU Tandon and at several other universities in the U.S. and in Europe, on a topic of mutual interest. Research areas include algorithmic fairness, interpretability and explainability, differential privacy, data management for machine learning, causal inference, and social media and news analysis.

“The invasion of Ukraine and the heartbreaking crisis that is unfolding has many dimensions, including the disruption of the lives and careers of scholars and students who have the potential to contribute to new knowledge that will benefit humanity,” said NYU Tandon’s Dean Jelena Kovačević. “This partnership is beneficial to a great number of students and families. We look forward to supporting the citizens of Ukraine in any way we can.”
