NYC Media Lab’s Annual Summit will highlight NYU Tandon’s emerging technology research

NYC Media Lab, housed at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, will host its sixth Annual Summit (NYCML’19) on Thursday, September 26, 2019 in Downtown Brooklyn. The full day event will be held within labs and classrooms across NYU Tandon as well as neighboring New York City College of Technology (CUNY) campus.

Founded in 2010, NYC Media Lab is dedicated to driving innovation and ultimately job growth in media and technology by facilitating collaboration between the City’s universities and its companies. Comprised of a consortium including The New York City Economic Development Corporation, School of Visual Arts, New York University, Columbia University, The New School, CUNY, and Pratt Institute, NYC Media Lab's goals are to generate research and development, knowledge transfer, and talent across all of the city’s campuses.

NYCML’19 helps to support ongoing collaborations between universities and Lab corporate members. The event will include 100+ emerging technology demonstrations produced by faculty and students; 18+ workshops led by faculty, executives, and technologists; mainstage keynotes, presentations and discussions; and a startup pavilion of early stage entrepreneurial concepts. Senior executives from media, technology, telecom and retail companies will be in attendance at the event, with attendance anticipated to reach 1,000 individuals.  

NYC Media Lab is proud to bring several program areas to the event that highlight the cutting-edge research and entrepreneurship taking place at NYU Tandon:

• Kurt Becker, Vice Dean for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, will give a welcome address on the NYCML’19 mainstage at 9:45AM alongside others from NYC Media Lab's leadership and oversight board.
• Yao Wang, Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering, alongside students Jack Langerman and Zhipeng Fan will give a mainstage presentation on their NYC Media Lab project with Viacom, where they used deep learning to label and rank information extracted from TV shows. 
• Carla Gannis, the new Industry Professor at NYU Integrated Digital Media (IDM), will lead a workshop on using AI to fuel artistic and creative practice. Ganniss will be joined by startup Playform, an intuitive and code-free online platform that supports artists. 
• NYU Future Labs' General Manager Craig Wilson will lead an open house and discussion on how Future Labs startups and programs have had an impact of $4.1 billion on New York City. This session will take place at NYU’s newest facility at 370 Jay Street, and will highlight innovative companies in the incubators. 
• Victoria Bill, Director of NYU Tandon MakerSpace, will host dozens demonstrations from across NYC Media Lab's ecosystem. Bill will also lead a workshop and walking tour of the MakerSpace to show attendees the next generation of PCB production technologies. 

Dozens of interactive demonstrations from NYU Tandon will be on display at the event’s Demo Expo, including projects from Thanasis Korakis, Research Assistant Professor; Sonia Castelo Quispe, Postdoctoral Research Associate; and the Christopher Slezak, Ph.D. Candidate, Electrical and Computer Engineering.
