New Awards and Recognitions for NYU Tandon

Tandon’s community, departments, and courses have received a flurry of accolades in the last few months.

NYU Tandon's Financial Engineering program makes top 10

NYU Tandon was ranked 8th in the 2021 QuantNet Ranking of Best Financial Engineering Programs, up from 9th in the 2020 rankings and a total of eight spots since 2016. As one of the largest financial engineering programs in the world, the program expands conventional financial engineering to encompass technology and innovation, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain/cryptocurrencies, and data science.

The rankings were based on a number of factors, including student satisfaction, selectivity of the programs, and job placement results (including salaries). Thanks to dedicated personnel for career placement as part of that program, Financial Engineering graduates have a step up on graduates from competing programs.

This continues the hot streak of awards and high rankings earned by the M.S. in Financial Engineering program. The Quant Finance Master’s Guide for 2020, published by Risk.net, placed the New York University Tandon School of Engineering M.S. in Financial Engineering fifth in the world — an eight-position leap from last year. Risk.net, one of the foremost financial publications, measured such factors as graduate salaries, employment rate, program selectivity, student-lecturer contact hours, and faculty research. Additionally, TFE Times listed NYU Tandon M.S. Financial Engineering as number three among the 2020 Best Master’s of Financial Engineering Programs, up from number four last year.

Top 20 University for minority engineers

NYU has made the annual Minority Engineer “Top 20 Universities” list for 2020, to be published in the fall edition of Minority Engineer magazine. The readers of Minority Engineer (136,804 engineering students and professionals who are members of minority groups in all career disciplines) selected the top universities and graduate schools in the country that they believe offer a diversified curriculum, student base, and faculty, as well as foster a diverse and inclusive learning environment.

This is just the latest recognition of NYU Tandon’s philosophy of engineering for equality. Initiatives like Black and Latino Men @ Tandon and Inclusion @ Tandon are fostering an inclusive environment for learning and research, widening the STEM pipeline, and supporting groups of people who are still underrepresented in the engineering field and academia. But beyond how our faculty looks, engineers at Tandon are bringing their commitment to equality to their research itself. Across the school, researchers are focusing their efforts on minimizing the bias of AI, studying how electrical outages unfairly affect communities of color, and making transportation more accessible and equitable, as just a few examples.

Awards for Data Visualization and Computer Graphics

New York University has been ranked the number one school for computer graphics and visualization by CS Rankings. These rankings take into account the publishing strength of schools, analyzing the number of papers and data placed in prestigious journals and conferences. Research from NYU Tandon’s Computer Science and Engineering Department played a large part in NYU’s high ranking.

The recognition acknowledged the wide variety of pieces this year published by members of NYU Tandon in this field. The recognized research includes Claudio Silva’s work analyzing thousands of photos of New York City to better understand urban infrastructure and movement patterns; Enrico Bertini’s creation of an interactive visualization technique for understanding and inspecting machine learning models; and Oded Nov’s research into the racial disparities in access to telemedicine, among the work of many others.

Additionally, the Information Visualization Specialization from NYU Tandon was ranked as one of the top 10 data visualization courses and online certifications in 2020 by Analytics Insight. Available on Coursera, this class provides learners with the necessary knowledge and practical skills to develop a strong foundation in information visualization and to design and develop advanced applications for visual data analysis. The specialization is characterized by two main complementary features: (1) providing a strong understanding of visual perception and the theory of visual encoding to design and evaluate innovative visualization methods; (2) providing the necessary skills to develop advanced web-based applications for visual data analysis.
