""

I want to work to preserve our fragile planet, build our economy and workforce for the future, and pass a better world to all Americans. I feel I can do this by supporting science and science-based decision-making in the Biden administration. I have great hope that we can put science back to work for the benefit of all.”

- Frances Arnold

Co-hosted by the Tandon Women Faculty group & the Women’s Leadership Forum, this Fireside chat features Nobel Laureate, Dr. Frances Arnold (2018). Frances Arnold studied mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University. She continued her academic journey at the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a doctorate in chemical engineering in 1985. The following year, Arnold joined the faculty of chemical engineering at the California Institute of Technology. There she intended to use emerging DNA technology to design new enzymes that could produce pharmaceuticals, plastics and other chemicals that would otherwise be made with toxic materials. In 1993, Arnold did just that with much success; the uses of her results included more environmentally friendly manufacturing of chemical substances, such as pharmaceuticals, and the production of renewable fuels.

Arnold,  a respected pioneer in the fields of protein and chemical engineering, has been named Co-Chair of President Biden's Science and Technology Advisory Council to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).
