English Language Proficiency Test

Overall Testing Requirements & Who Needs to Submit

All applicants to the NYU Tandon School of Engineering for graduate study must demonstrate excellent English language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension. Proficiency will be determined by the:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
  • Duolingo English Test
  • CAE (Cambridge English: Advanced)
  • Pearson PTE Academic exams

You must submit your English language proficiency (ELP) scores electronically via the testing agency to our Graduate Admissions office at engineering.gradinfo@nyu.edu. ELP scores uploaded directly to the application portal by the applicant will not be accepted!

The NYU Tandon School of Engineering Graduate Admissions Office reserves the right to request proof of English competency from any applicant. At least one of the exams mentioned above is required if you fall into one of the following categories:

  1. All International applicants (those who have or will request a visa)
  2. Applicants whose first language is not English and/or who have not completed a bachelor’s degree in the United States.

TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE scores are valid for two years. The test must be taken again if your score is older than two years at the time of application submission.

ETS is now offering at-home testing for the TOEFL for applicants affected by COVID-19. Please visit the ETS website TOEFL iBT® Home Edition Test and Other COVID-19 Updates page for more information and to see if you are eligible for this option.


ELP Waiver Request Form

Applicants may request a waiver of English Language Proficiency Testing for special cases by submitting a waiver request form. Please note! The request will be reviewed only after transcripts have been received. Once all required documents are submitted, your waiver will be processed by our Graduate Admissions team in 2-3 weeks.
